So many people view LinkedIn as a glorified bulletin board on which to post their resumes. If that’s how far you’re taking your LinkedIn experience, you’re missing out on its greatest power – to build community. LinkedIn allows you to reinforce your personal brand and establish meaningful connections through engagement with others.

Like conventional, in-person relationship-building, everyone needs to do this whether they’re in job search mode or not. In fact, the best time to establish connections is when you’re in a seat and most self-assured.

How Does This Work?

While most of us are familiar with LinkedIn’s value for job searches, namely applying for positions and researching individuals and companies before meetings or interviews, one of the most impactful uses is establishing relationships with potential allies in your job search through meaningful engagement.

Who Are Your Targets?

- Those in roles that align with your interests.

- Employees of companies that capture your interest.

- Individuals with shared affinities, such as alumni from your school, who are more likely to assist due to a common experience.

- Experts in fields that intrigue you, including thought leaders, investors, teachers, and researchers.

The Step-By-Step Approach

1. Identify individuals you believe can be beneficial in your search. For instance, search for people discussing topics that interest you, like "social media marketing." Identify top influencers in this field.

2. Follow intriguing individuals. Unlike connection requests (establishing direct, 1st level connections), following anyone on LinkedIn doesn't require mutual interest. Then click the bell 🔔 on their profile to ensure you see their posts. You can choose to see all posts or just the top ones.

3. Engage with their posts by reading and commenting. Express your thoughts and insights on their posts. This not only broadens the audience for the post but also establishes your online persona as a knowledgeable and interesting individual.

4. In time, issue a connection request to them. Becoming first-level connections means that you’ll see more of their activity, and they’ll see more of yours. You’ll be “bumping into them” more frequently, and it strengthens your connection over time.

How should I comment on others’ posts?

1. Highlight the key message of the post. Distill the key message the original poster has made.

2. Supply your own take on this issue. Demonstrate you embrace the concept. Add something valuable that the original poster didn’t include.

3. Express gratitude for the post. Show your appreciation for the work of the original poster.

The value of reacting and commenting This not only helps the post reach a wider audience but also encourages meaningful conversations. Engaging consistently contributes to the growth of your LinkedIn network.

Anticipate connections and network growth As you engage, you may find others connecting with you. When you extend connections to others you frequently interact with, show appreciation for their engagement in your request. Your network will expand, offering access to more profiles and potential visibility for your posts and comments.

Best practices for engaging with others Consistency is key. Turn on your emotional intelligence when interacting, emphasizing empathy and avoiding negative behaviors. Be a giver in relationships, and know that little flattery can go a long way.

Engage with those ahead of you in your career journey. Connect with individuals who are several years ahead in your career, expanding your network to potentially beneficial contacts.

How this helps when you’re searching for a job Building connections at companies of interest enables you to go beyond merely lobbing in an application. It’s possible to develop allies who can advocate for you to stand out among applicants.

Additional considerations Take your time; relationships require nurturing. Be cautious of individuals using LinkedIn for improper reasons, and don't rush into requests before building rapport.

The Bottom Line

Interaction on LinkedIn complements other traditional forms of networking, providing access to a diverse and accomplished group of individuals. While this process has an element of randomness, I’m sure you’ll find this approach bears fruit over time.
