Ageism is a troubling phenomenon. If you’ve ever been impacted by it, this edition of my newsletter is for you.

Its prevalence is sickening.

According to a report on ageism by people analytics firm Visier, only 11.7% of the tech workforce belongs to the 52+ age group, compared to 26.7% in non-tech industries.

Ageism can drag you down and even depress you.

And it can keep you from earning a living at a time in your life when you thought you’d be in your peak earnings years. When you may have an even greater ability to focus on work and shine since your kids may have grown and flown.

As the workplace proudly embraces diversity and inclusion, why is age still hindering professional growth and opportunities?

Fear not. Here are six ways to conquer age-based discrimination:

1. Prepare Your Communication. You may be deemed overqualified. That’s code for what they’re really thinking: expensive, likely to get bored, or on the verge of retiring. Your communication should underscore your commitment to working, the opportunity at hand, and the value you bring through the experience you’ve amassed, including the perspective you’ve developed by being someone who’s “been there and done that.” If you are genuinely enthusiastic about the role, show it. Don’t make it seem like you’re there just for the paycheck.

2. Market Yourself Using an Age-resistant Resume and LinkedIn Profile. So many people bring me resumes that scream, “I’m old.”  Emphasize accomplishments and achievements over time in grade. And please don’t describe yourself as “seasoned.” You’re not food! Include the last 20 years of experience, max. Leave dates of education off. And ditch the AOL email address.

3. Embrace Lifelong Learning. Age should never be a barrier to acquiring new skills and knowledge. Embrace a growth mindset of lifelong learning, staying abreast of industry trends and technological advancements. By showcasing a commitment to ongoing development, you not only enhance your professional capabilities but also challenge age-related stereotypes that suggest resistance to change.

4. Leverage Technology. Demonstrate a mastery of technology to dispel age-related misconceptions. Embrace digital tools, collaborate through online platforms, and showcase proficiency in relevant software. By integrating technology into your workflow, you enhance your productivity and send a powerful message about your adaptability and comfort with modern work methods.

5. Participate in Cross-Generational Projects. Actively engage in projects that bring together individuals from different age groups. Cross-generational collaboration enriches the collective pool of skills and dismantles preconceived notions about age-specific roles. By participating in such initiatives, you contribute to a culture that values the unique perspectives each generation brings to the table.

6. Foster a Multi-generational Network. Build a robust professional network that spans generations. Engage with colleagues of all ages, fostering relationships that transcend generational boundaries. Actively participate in mentorship programs, both as a mentor and mentee. This way, you enhance your understanding of diverse perspectives and reinforce that valuable insights are not confined to a specific age group.

The Bottom Line

As we navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, challenging ageism is not just a personal endeavor but a collective responsibility. We need to strive for a professional world where individuals are recognized for their abilities, regardless of the number of years under their belts.

If you’re facing ageism, know you’re not alone and that with these tips and other sage guidance, you can overcome it!
